Lefthand

If you are looking for a short hike and to beat the heat then left hand trail might be the perfect little break for you. This hike takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Left hand is known as the local swimming hole known by the locals but in the last few years it has been advertised more to the tourist. You'll have to cross mill creek a about 4 or 5 times along this hike in knee deep waters, so do not take this trail unless you plan on getting wet. During the weekdays there are a lot less people hiking this trail. You might get lucky and have the place to yourself. This is also a great hike for children but I wouldn't recommend taking any small children in April/May as snow melt off from the La Sal mountains causes the water level to be much higher during that time of the year.

This is actually a fun little trail. You'll at time feel like a small hamster running through tubes as rock wall and brush consistently surround you during the hike. You'll see little hollowed out areas in the rock wall along the way. Despite the name left hand you'll actually stay to the right of mill creek the entire time except for a few short crossings until you get to a fork in the canyon. At the for you take a left and there are signs along the trail letting you know to turn. Perhaps, this is the reason it is called Lefthand to let you know to go left at the fork in the canyon.

When the trail comes to a large open area you are about half way there and if you listen closely you can hear the small waterfall at this point.

At this open part of the trail you'll see a trail of rocks that go to the left like it is leading you towards a special cave in the distance but don't be fooled by it. There isn't much to see, just a hallowed out hole in the mountain.

Where is Lefthand Trail located?
